Midstream Pipeline Gasoline Release

Environmental Challenge
An oil & gas client called Pinnacle Engineering with an emergency issue: an outside party struck a large underground pipeline, leading to the release of 25,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline.
This release was in the middle of an urban area with both commercial and residential property nearby, creating additional pressure to resolve the issue in a timely and effective manner.
Inspection & Remediation Solutions
Pinnacle’s team immediately provided excavation services and installed soil vapor extraction wells. We also performed a storm sewer flushing and inspection, and petroleum vapor surveys. Temporary stormwater management methods were also installed.
The project also included a groundwater site assessment through the installation and monitoring of groundwater wells and a groundwater receptor survey. Pinnacle provided engineering design and O&M services for the soil vapor extraction and treatment system, and regular monitoring of the system’s performance.
Additionally, Pinnacle provided stormwater inspections, responded to odor complaints, and served as a liaison to the city.
Analysis & Results
This project was granted closure from the MPCA approximately 18 months after the incident occurred.
