Environmental Challenges
Pinnacle Engineering was approached by a Minnesota wood product manufacturer whose facilities produce a large amount of wood waste. The manufacturer wanted to recycle its scrap wood and baghouse dust to be reused as animal bedding. However, under Minnesota rules, companies are not allowed to send adulterated wood (classified as solid waste) to recycling facilities.
Testing & Regulatory Support
Pinnacle tested the adulterated wood and narrowed the scope to including only the appropriate testing methods. We submitted an application to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and received a Case-Specific Beneficial Use Determination (CSBUD) authorizing the facility to reuse the wood waste in a beneficial way (reducing landfill usage and disposal costs, providing an organic agricultural soil amendment, and reducing/replacing first use ag products) that was approved by the State.
Additional Benefits & Results
Pinnacle also negotiated an updated agreement with the MPCA, allowing testing to be conducted every five years instead of annually and saving the client thousands of dollars over the term of the agreement with the MPCA.
